My name is Roel Adrian Garcia. I am a husband, father, teacher, cat lover, an avid reader and writer of short stories and poetry. And I also am legally blind.
In 1986 a significant change occurred in my life when I lost much of my eye sight during the summer of that year. Doctors determined I had a condition called optic neuropathy. Doctors believed a virus attacked my optic nerves, leaving them atrophied and causing a large blockage in my central vision.
However, undeterred, I went to college in Kingsville, Texas, not far from where I lived. I eventually went in the direction I thought I’d enjoy since I loved writing and reading. I attained a bachelor’s degree in English and history. I followed that up with earning an M.A. in English in 1999.
Unsure of what to do, I started work in journalism in Texas and subsequently in Holland, Michigan after moving here in 2003. I worked as a reporter and in editor capacity at several newspapers before leaving the field to go into teaching. Since 2009 I’ve served as an adjunct English instructor teaching composition for Grand Rapids Community College.
In 2000 I met my wife, Dawn. We got married in Texas in 2002. In 2003 we moved to Holland, Michigan, where we live today. We adopted three children in 2011. We also live with my cat, Katrina, who I’ve had since 2002.
Having achieved many goals, a lifetime still awaits me. I want to keep growing and learning as a husband, father, teacher and writer.
