You’ve probably heard of the ALS Ice-bucket Challenge by now and watched a few too. There are so many in fact that I’m seeing Ice Bucket FAIL Compilations like this all over my news feed. But, how much do you really know about ALS?
According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association's (MDA) webpage, "ALS, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a disease of the parts of the nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. Nerve cells that control muscle cells are gradually lost, causing the muscles to become weak and eventually nonfunctional. Walking, talking, eating, hugging and even breathing become nearly impossible, although the mind stays sharp. Most people with ALS live 3 to 5 years after diagnosis."
As an individual with a neuromuscular disease myself, I easily sympathize with wanting to raise awareness for a real and very scary disease. And these videos are doing just that...raising awareness and money to better understand a cure. Or at the very least, aide in better quality and length of life.
So here is yet another video and although it's meant to be funny, by 1:58, it becomes very personal. He and his mother represent a very visual and authentic view of ALS. I encourage you to watch the whole video.
